This ancient olive soap is probably the oldest and purest soap in the world. Aleppo's “green gold" is made from olive and laurel (bay) oils whose legendary skincare properties remain unique. Olive groves, are plentiful in Aleppo, (Syria) and once the oils are harvested, they are boiled and mixed usually during the winter months. This exceptionally mild soap is cooked in cauldrons from olive oil, laurel oil and soda (extracted from sea salt). The mixture is then poured onto a flat surface, like a shallow swimming pool, and then cooled. Three days later, the soap has been cooled, cut into individual cakes, stamped by hand and stacked to dry and mature in the sun. Following ancient tradition, the soap is then dried for 9 months in the open air. Over this period the soap will benefit from the heat of the sun, gradually acquiring its exceptional hardness and final rust-like hue. The soap starts out green and yellows as it gets older, In Arabic it is referred to as ghar soap, in French as savon d'Alep.
